Hospitals tend to blame mothers when birth doesn't go right

The news that the U.S. is the most dangerous place in the developed world to give birth is startling. It is hard to believe that a country in which there is so much wealth and hospitals that are filled with technology can still have such dismal statistics when it comes to childbirth. A birth injury can be serious and sometimes they are even caused by negligent behavior on the part of the medical provider.

The United States has a large number of births each year that result in injuries to the mother or child. For years, hospitals have blamed these injuries on circumstances that are beyond their control, such as poverty and pre-existing medical conditions. A recent analysis of birth injuries and maternal injuries and deaths point to these tragic situations actually being caused by other circumstances. The report highlights a mix of misdiagnosis, a failure to follow safety measures and delayed care for the baby or mother. Examples of negligent medical care include a woman who nearly bled to death because of an emergency C-section that was performed by doctors in training, another woman who died because her dangerous blood pressure was ignored by doctors and another woman whose legs and hands had to be amputated because the doctors in training didn't recognize the signs of an infection.

Each year, over 700 women die and 50,000 more are injured during childbirth. These numbers are unacceptable in a nation that prides itself on its advanced health care. If a person believes their loved one is a victim of medical malpractice they may want to get more information about medical malpractice legal options. Victims may be able to seek compensation for their medical expenses, funeral expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering and other damages.

Childbirth is supposed to be one of the happiest times of a family's life together. But, all too often something goes wrong. It is important to hold medical providers accountable for their mistakes so that they don't harm anyone else.
