Concussions in youth football-a serious matter in New York

Many parents of New City area kids know how sports play a major role in their kids' lives. Many children are in multiple sports and parents spend a lot of time shuttling their kids around town. Some sports may be more dangerous than others and football is one sport where parents should understand the risks involved, including head and brain injuries.

Football is the most popular sport in the United States, so it is no wonder that so many kids play it. Football continues to be a sport where injuries can also be a factor.

Lately, there has been increasing concern about kids playing football and the risks of concussion. A brain injury is often serious and can lead to life-long repercussions and permanent brain damage. Concussions occur when there is a traumatic blow to the head, something that can often happen in football.

There is also research showing that repeated blows to the head that do not result in concussions can also have long term health effects. Many NFL players have been diagnosed with CTE, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a disease found in athletes that have suffered repeated brain trauma.

In New York, the governor recently signed a bill requiring the Department of Health to produce information packets on concussions and sub-concussive blows to the head and the health effects that go with them. This packet would be distributed to parents and guardians of kids playing tackle football. The governor believes parents need to understand the risks of playing football and help them know best practices that should be played on the field.

Concussions in youth football may have met public health crisis standards. A single concussion can cause permanent brain injury to a child.
