Medical errors can lead to cerebral palsy

Expectant parents in the New City area are excited about the upcoming birth of their child. This is a time of great energy and enthusiasm for the new arrival and parents spend months thinking of names, decorating a nursery, and preparing themselves for the baby.

Most births go as planned but occasionally a birth injury occurs that causes serious injury to the baby such as cerebral palsy.

Cerebral Palsy is a movement disorder, posture disorder or muscle tone disorder. One cause of cerebral palsy is a lack of oxygen to the baby's brain during labor or delivery. The brain injury has many different symptoms that can appear when the child misses developmental milestones. A child can have spastic or shaking limbs, trouble with their movement or seeing or hearing. They can have big delays in developmental milestones such as rolling over, reaching for an object, sitting, standing or walking. Cerebral palsy can play a large party in a child's development and over the course of their lives, requiring frequent doctor visits, therapy visits and other medical needs that can cost families thousands and thousands of dollars.

If a family believes their child's cerebral palsy was caused by a medical error, they may want to speak with a legal professional who is skilled in birth injuries. An attorney understands what a family is going through and can help investigate the cause of the injury. An attorney can review medical records and consult with medical experts to help families get the answers they need as to what happened. If the child's cerebral palsy is found to be caused by a mistake made by a medical professional compensation may be available for medical expenses, future medical expenses, pain and suffering and other damages.

A birth injury can seriously affect a family both now and for many years to come. If the birth injury was caused by a medical professional's negligence the family has the legal right to hold them accountable for their mistake.
