After-effects of a TBI in adults get overlooked

Being involved in an accident can be a shocking and overwhelming experience, as no one fully expects to ever be harmed in such a situation. This can intensify when a victim is severely injured in the incident. A head trauma is one of the most serious injuries, and when one suffers a brain injury, this type of injury will likely impact the victim for years if not the rest of his or her life.

A traumatic brain injury is a serious injury; however, the effects of this injury do not always show immediately following an accident. In other words, the affects of a head trauma may not fully manifest until months or years down the road.

Based on a current study, head injuries are often overlooked in the psychiatric evaluations of adults. If a head injury did not just occur, some specialists fail to consider a past head trauma as the underlying cause or partial cause of a mental or physical issue. This can crate problems when it comes to obtaining an effective treatment for the medical issue one is currently suffering from.

Thus, it is important to be aware of the acute and long-term effects of a TBI. With regards to acute effects, this often includes feeling stunned, headache, nausea, vomiting, sleepiness, dilation of one or both pupils, convulsions or the loss of consciousness. For long-term effects, this could be a decease in cognitive functions, mood regulation, energy and alertness, the ability to filter environmental stimuli or sensory and motor functions and coordination.

Just like not all accidents are alike, not all head traumas manifest in the same way. Thus, it is important for those suffering from a head or brain injury to understand their rights and options. If a negligent party is to blame for the accident and resulting injuries, it may be possible to hold them accountable through a civil action.
