Could a simple injection heal spinal cord injuries?

An injury to a person's spinal cord could alter his or her entire life. Depending on the exact circumstances, spinal cord injuries can result in partial or full paralysis, meaning that affected people may not be able to work or function the same way they always have done before. Researchers recently published findings that could change all that, claiming that a certain type of injection may have the potential to heal spinal cord injuries. Here is what New York families need to know.

The researchers found a way to deliver a certain type of neural cell that could prevent further injury to a spinal cord and may even increase the number of cells that could potentially repair injury. In the past, researchers had to inject cells directly into a part of the spinal column, which could be easily damaged by causing more injury or even bleeding. What researchers found is a way to inject these neural cells into part of the spinal cord where there is less risk of injury.

The new way of injecting these neural cells into the different part of the spinal cord means that a higher number of cells can be transferred. This means that the cells can eventually move into the same area where researchers used to do these types of injections and increase in number in several areas of the spine. The research was conducted on rats, but plans are already underway to expand testing to include other, larger animals that have anatomy similar to that of humans.

Though researchers are optimistic about where these findings could lead, they don't change the severity of spinal cord injuries. Those here in New York who suffer this type of injury due to someone else's negligence may want to consider available legal options, including a civil claim filed by a personal injury attorney. Spinal cord injuries may require lifelong treatment and it is imperative that those responsible are held accountable.
