Potential new treatment for brain-related birth injuries

When a baby is born in New York or elsewhere, parents trust that medical professionals will provide the best care possible. Sadly, that does not always happen. When a baby's brain is injured at birth, the consequences can be lifelong. A loss of oxygen can mean permanent impairment in both cognitive and physical abilities. There is some promising news on treatment methods that may help these brain-related birth injuries.

A recently released study showed how cooling a baby's brain may help treat these types of injuries. The neonatologist who led the study says that cooling the center of the brain is the important, and that they traditionally reduce body temperature in a controlled way to accomplish this. The study looked at imaging to see just how cool the center of the brain was getting, as they expected it would be warmer than the surrounding tissue.

What they found instead was that the center of the brain was also the coldest. They theorize this may be due to cooled blood circulating through the brain and reducing the temperature. They say that the study shows how effective the therapy can be, which has been backed up by evidence from multiple clinical trials. The study also revealed that not all parts of the brain were cooled to the same temperature, which can give them helpful information in treating different, specific brain injuries.

As promising as this treatment is, birth injuries due to medical provider error should never happen to anyone. Children who suffer a lack of oxygen at birth and their families may have to contend with serious injuries for the rest of the child's life. Those here in New York who want to hold a negligent medical provider responsible may want to consult an attorney with extensive experience in handling medical malpractice litigation.
