Construction accidents: Worker killed, another injured

People who work in the construction industry provide a great service. They also place themselves at significant risk of injury or even death every time they set food on a job site. Construction accidents can have dire consequences for victims and their families as everyone tries to work through what happened. Unfortunately, that answer isn't always so clear and there could be multiple factors involved. This is what New York authorities are trying to determine after an accident on a construction site resulted in serious injury to one worker and another worker's death.

Officials say that the incident happened early on a recent morning. Apparently, workers were attempting to clear a construction site that will eventually be used for a large mixed-use building. Workers were on the second floor of a structure when witnesses say that a wall collapsed. A 50-year-old worker died and a 44-year-old worker sufferred serious injuries, apparently from the wall falling on his legs.

The fire department responded to the scene after receiving a call shortly after the incident. Witnesses say that it looked as though part of the wall may have caved in and landed on construction machinery. Investigators do not suspect that anyone deliberately caused the accident but the investigation remains ongoing. The Department of Buildings has assured the families of the victims that it will do everything in its power to hold those responsible accountable.

If the investigation finds that a third party was responsible for this wall collapse, such as a property owner or equipment manufacturer, that party could face civil litigation. Either the surviving victim or the family of the victim who died could work with an attorney here in New York in the hopes of collecting monetary damages that could be used to cover expenses related to the incident. Construction accidents like this one should never have to happen, but if they do, families have options to pursue justice.
