March is Brain Injury Awareness month

People with brain injuries know all too well how life-changing they can be. Depending on the precise injury, a person could experience both cognitive and physical ability impairment. March is Brain Injury Awareness Month in New York and across the nation and advocates want people to know the facts about brain injuries and just how they can impact people's lives.

Traumatic brain injuries are a significant cause of disability, impacting thousands of people across the country. Over 150 people lose their lives to a traumatic brain injury every day. In military personnel, over 400,000 people suffered brain injuries from 2000 to 2019. In just 2014, the United States had nearly three million hospital visits due to traumatic brain injuries. Nearly a third of the victims were children.

Motor vehicle accidents are a primary cause of death involving a traumatic brain injury for people aged 15 to 34 and people older than 75. Any kind of blow to the head can cause a TBI, leading to impairment that prevents the brain from functioning normally. The Brain Injury Association of America uses the month of March each year to educate the public about the potential dangers and to support those who have experienced a traumatic brain injury, along with their families.

Brain injury victims may need treatment for the rest of their lives. If their injury was due to someone else's carelessness, such as a car accident, the victim may have grounds to file a personal injury claim against any party or parties believed responsible. An attorney here in New York can advise impacted families what their available options may be and how to proceed with a claim.
