Construction accidents: Trench collapse seriously injures worker

Most workers don't face any kind of significant risk while on the job. However, certain industries are more prone to danger than others, including the construction industry. Construction accidents are all too common and can happen when a company fails to properly protect workers. One recent accident on a construction site here in New York left multiple workers injured, one seriously, and authorities are now trying to determine whether their employer is to blame.

According to reports, the accident happened on a recent afternoon when workers were attempting to do excavation work. They were trying to remove tree stumps from the backyard of a building. They dug a trench about 4 feet deep and one wall apparently collapsed. Three workers were pinned beneath the rubble, one of them under cinder blocks.

The workers were freed by firefighters. All of the workers were rushed to nearby hospitals. One was seriously injured but is expected to survive. The others' injuries were not serious.

There is no word on exactly why the trench collapsed on the workers. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration may decide to conduct an investigation to determine what may have happened. If it finds that the company that employed the workers violated safety guidelines, the company may be subject to a significant fine.

When construction accidents like this one happen, workers may need significant medical treatment in order to fully recover. The associated costs can cause a serious burden on workers and their families, especially if the employee is unable to work while healing and the family relied on those wages. Here in New York, injured employees may want to file for workers' compensation to cover those costs and make up for the lost wages. An attorney with experience in handling employment law claims can serve as a fierce advocate for those in need.
