Technology offers hope for those with spinal cord injuries

A spinal cord injury can change a person's life forever. It is the type of injury that can inhibit movement, affecting a person's ability to work as well as complete basic activities of daily living. Fortunately, recent technological advancements have given many of those with spinal cord injuries the ability to walk again. Families here in New York may find it fascinating that wearable robots are giving people back their mobility and freedom.

The CEO of one company that builds these wearable robots is delighted by the positive impact the products are having in the lives of paralyzed people. He reports that everyone in the family benefits when a patient is able to move around more freely. It has the potential to change many lives since, according to one study, almost one in 50 people have some type of paralysis. The products are "exoseletons" and enable people to control movements through a wristwatch connected to sensors on the body.

About 300,000 people fit the profile of someone able to use this technology, but that number will grow significantly as advancements and research continues. The person generally undergoes a few therapy sessions to learn to use the robot and can then use it to move around almost as well as before the injury. The exoskeletons are also useful for people who have had a stroke or have a neurological disorder.

Though this new technology is exciting, it doesn't change the fact that many people in New York and elsewhere will suffer spinal cord injuries at some point in their lives. If the injury was caused by someone else's negligence, the accident victim may have grounds to file a personal injury claim against the party believed responsible. An attorney with extensive experience in this area of the law can guide those with questions.
