Construction accidents: Worker injured falling into pit

When workers are seriously injured while on the job, it can devastate the lives of both them and those who care for them. The construction industry is particularly susceptible to cases of injured workers, since these jobs can carry a certain amount of risk. If a worker is injured while on the job, it may be reason to file for workers' compensation, since injuries resulting from construction accidents can drastically affect quality of life. One New York worker may need to use this benefit after he suffered a head injury after falling into a pit at a construction site.

The accident occurred on a recent morning at a job site. For reasons that were not immediately clear, a worker apparently fell into a pit that was 25 feet deep. Emergency crews had to send a basket down into the pit using a mechanical hauling system. Rescuers got the worker into the basket and raised him to the surface. The man was rushed to a local hospital where he was treated for a head injury and his condition is considered stable.

At the moment, there is no word on a potential investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, though that is typically what happens when a workplace accident occurs. OSHA representatives will investigate and determine whether the company the man worked for was responsible for the accident in any way. If OSHA determines the company was at fault, it will likely issue citations and corresponding fines and the company will have to answer to them.

When construction accidents like this one happen, workers may have a long road to healing, if that is even possible. They may incur significant medical bills, which may be exacerbated by the missed income due to the workers not being able to work. They may want to file for workers' compensation to help them through this potentially difficult time. Workers here in New York who are unsure of exactly how to do that may want to speak with an attorney who has extensive knowledge of the subject.
