Brain injury findings may indicate recovery potential

People here in New York suffer brain injuries in a number of ways, but when they happen due to someone else's negligence, they may be all the more traumatizing for everyone involved. A brain injury that causes a person to lose consciousness may be particularly serious. This type of injury could have long-lasting cognitive and physical effects, even if the person eventually wakes up. A recent study showed some promise however, as it found a simple way to determine the possibility that an unconscious patient might eventually regain consciousness.

Brain injury may increase risk of dementia

Certain kinds of injuries can have significant consequences for those who suffer from them. Traumatic brain injuries can be particularly devastating, as the effects can last for a person's entire life. A recent study looked at this as it attempted to determine whether military veterans have a higher incidence of dementia than civilians. Though it found no increased risk between the two groups in general, it discovered an increased risk of dementia if the veteran had suffered a traumatic brain injury. This may be valuable information for anyone here in New York who has a loved one with such an injury.

Spinal cord injuries often have psychological impact

Most people here in New York understand just how devastating an injury to the spinal cord can be for those who suffer one. Depending on the exact circumstances, a person with a spinal cord injury could have partial or full paralysis and struggle with basic human functions that those without injury may take for granted. What many don't realize is just how much of an impact this type of injury can have on a person's psychological well-being. Fortunately, researchers are working not only to raise awareness of this aspect of spinal cord injuries but also to develop tools that can help.

Choosing a spinal cord injury rehabilitation center

People who suffer a spinal cord injury will often need long-term rehabilitation. While some might be able to do this in the comfort of their own home or via outpatient means, others will need a more intensive program. This is when they might have to start looking into inpatient spinal cord injury rehabilitation centers.

Construction accident at high school results in worker's death

Certain job industries in New York carry more risk to employees than others, and nowhere is that more evident than in the construction industry. Construction workers do an important and necessary job, and despite this increased risk, there are many ways to protect them. There are times when an employee's company may be to blame for unsafe work conditions, or it could be the responsibility of a third party, such as a property owner. Either way, if a construction accident happens, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration will typically investigate to determine exactly what went on and whether any safety guidelines were violated. OSHA will have to do just that for a recent accident at a school that took the life of a construction worker.
