Construction accidents: High winds cause man to fall 40 feet

The construction industry is vital to communities across the nation, both in the jobs it provides and the resulting work that benefits the community. However, this industry is not without risk, and construction accidents happen far too often. One recent accident here in New York resulted in injuries for several workers. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration will now attempt to determine if proper safety protocols were in use or if the construction company should face punishment.

The incident happened on a recent weekday while several workers were placing roof trusses on a building. Apparently, high winds began to blow and several of the trusses were knocked over. One worker fell to the ground from about 40 feet up. He was seriously injured and had to be rushed to a nearby hospital. Two other workers were also injured and taken to hospitals for treatment, though their injuries are rated as minor.

OSHA will now conduct an investigation to determine whether the construction company followed appropriate safety regulations. If OSHA finds that certain protocols were violated, such as not providing employees with safety equipment or failing to properly train workers, the company could end up paying a significant fine. If that happens, the company could pay the amount assessed or contest OSHA's findings through the proper means.

The injured employees may decide to file for workers' compensation. Doing so could be a way to help them and their families financially while they recover. It could be extremely important if any of the workers' injuries prevent them from working for a period of time. Workers here in New York who are unsure of how to navigate workers' compensation as it relates to construction accidents may want to consult an attorney who can advise them of their available options.
