High winds can cause serious construction accidents

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the New York State Police are investigating an incident that occurred on a recent Wednesday at a construction site in Jefferson County. According to a preliminary police report, high winds might have played a role in the incident. Many construction accidents occur when workers at heights are exposed to very windy conditions.

Apparently, several construction workers were on a construction site at the roof level, setting trusses on a building structure. Reportedly, weather changes occurred during this process, bringing strong winds that compromised the stability of the roof trusses. When they started toppling, one of the workers lost his balance and fell to the ground. Authorities estimate the distance of the fall to be about 40 feet.

The 38-year-old worker suffered severe internal injuries. His condition was said to be critical, and he was airlifted to a medical facility. The falling trusses injured two more workers. However, their injuries were not life-threatening, and they were both transported to hospitals in the area. Their ages were listed as 38 and 29.

There is no mention of any fall protection worn by the severely injured worker, and the OSHA investigators will likely assess the employer's safety protocols. Many preventable construction accidents happen due to noncompliance with prescribed safety standards. However, the outcome of the investigation will not affect the injured worker's eligibility for workers' compensation benefits. A New York attorney with experience in this field of the law can provide support and guidance throughout ensuing legal and administrative proceedings in pursuit of compensation to cover medical expenses and lost wages.
